On January 22 Tracy Drake chief executive officer of the Columbiana County Port Authority the told directors the port authority that work has begun on the B-Telecom Ltd. fiber-optic network operations center in the World Trade Park, Leetonia. The project was helped by former state Rep. Charles Blasdel, R-1, East Liverpool, securing $500,000 in the last state capital budget, he noted.

B-Telecom has entered a partnership with a group that includes Case Western Reserve University, the former designating the operations a "broad-band digital center of excellence" that will serve as "an incubator for information technology development," Drake said. The digital center will occupy some 3,000 square feet of the 22,000-square-foot building under construction.

In addition to being the center of a fiber-optic network, the building will serve as a back-up data center for financial and medical records. It's too soon to know if the incubator will result in more employees there, Drake said.
